| About the Group The group helps members with research interest in South Australia to overcome the phobia most people have about it! There is a great wealth of other source material available to family historians. Our group hopes to bring these to the attention of researchers. We also hope to foster contacts with the South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society and to broaden our knowledge of South Australian history. |

Helpful Hints Anyone with South Australian ancestors must not go past the three following reference "bibles". With them, researching in SA can be a joy. All three are available in either WAGS or the State Reference Library. Sources for South Australian History by Andrew Guy Peake. There are two editions of this invaluable work (1987 and 1998), and a wise researcher will check both as information, such as shipping, varies. Relations in Records A guide to family history sources in the official records of South Australia, ie material generated by state government departments. Armed with this handbook you can then quote reference numbers of various records and then contact State Records to ask for a quote for the records to be searched, which will be greatly reduced given your ability to pinpoint exact records of interest. State Records also has an excellent website at: http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/ Kith and Kin A guide to the holdings of the State Library of South Australia, including the Mortlock Library of South Australiana. Again, armed with reference numbers researchers can contact the State Library for a research quote. The State Library's web site is: http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/ Incidentally, there is a large range of useful information leaflets to be found at this site, as well as access to several of the Library's catalogues, including the one for the photographic collection held in the Mortlock Library. |

Projects The South Australian Interest Group has embarked on two indexing projects. These both involve the newspaper the "Express" and "Telegraph" (as held on microfilm in the State Library of WA). The first index is the extraction of all the Birth, Death and Marriage records as they appear in the daily paper. We aim to cover the time period 1862-1870. The second project is the indexing of all the court reports as they appear in the newspaper for the same time period. This will cover the Supreme Court (both civil and criminal sittings), local and police courts of Adelaide and Port Adelaide, and courts from country areas as they appear. It will not include the Insolvency Court or Coroners reports as these are indexed by other sources. These projects are well underway and the volunteers appear to be becoming well and truly addicted to the other sections of the newspaper as well! Anyone who would like to help with this project, either by extracting the records at source, or by data entry on a computer, will be most welcome to join us. Enquiries should be directed to Robyn Hukin. rhukin@iinet.net.au |
