WAGS
Special Interest Group

About the Group

You don’t need to be a computer ‘nerd’ or expert to get some benefit from the Computer Interest Group (CIG).  We welcome new WAGS members who want to get the most out of their computers to help them with their genealogy research.

Formed many years ago (when computers were new and mysterious to many of us), the CIG has been meeting on a monthly basis since 1995.  With a mailing list of about 150 WAGS members, and average meeting attendance of around 30, the CIG is a great forum for WAGS members to discuss problems and solutions to do with computers and, more importantly, how to use their computers to get the most out of their genealogy research.

Our monthly meetings are designed to cover items of interest to the group and we generally follow an agenda like this:
  1. Items of general interest from the Computer World
  2. Keeping your computer safe and healthy from viruses, malware, scams and spam
  3. Genealogy programs – who’s using which one, problems, queries
  4. Genealogy sources, like CDs, websites, mailing lists, etc.
  5. Open forum – queries, comments, successes, problems
  6. WAGS/CIG business
Followed by a session using the big screen; either a demo of a pay-site or a website that may not be well-known, or a workshop/presentation/demo of some technique or genealogy software.

So if you use a computer for genealogy, the Computer Interest Group is worth visiting.  Bring along your queries and your successes - we may be able to help each other.

MEETINGS

We meet monthly (except January), on the second Saturday of the month, from 11am to 1pm, at Unit 4 of WAGS, May Street, Bayswater.  We’re a self-help group, aiming to improve our general knowledge about computers, as well as solving members’ problems.  Around 30 members attend monthly meeting.

All WAGS members are welcome to come along to our meetings and join our mailing list.  A gold coin donation at the meeting helps to build up funds to purchase additional resources for the library.  Maybe we’ll see you at one of our meetings soon.
